Do you think there is a relationship between video games and the brain?
I know many people who play video games and some of them are really addicted to it. For those people does not matter when and where, they can play it almost every time. For example, one of my cousins, who is a year older than me, has been playing video games since his childhood, and what I can say is that he improved his English thanks to the games. 🙂
I have many memories with him that he was trying to convince me to play the games but I think I am not into it a lot. Oh, but I played arcades for a long time when I was a kid and one of my favorite platform games was “Super Mario”.
For sure, video games and platforms have developed over the years because also technological developments get involved in it. In fact, many countries are willing to develop new and powerful video games because this is a huge market. Let’s look at some countries by game revenues:
- China and revenues (USD): $40,854M
- The United States and revenues (USD): $36,921M
- Japon and revenues (USD): $18,683M
- South Korea and revenues (USD): $6,564M
- Germany and revenues (USD): $5,965M
Well, there is a question that arises is how do video games have an impact on humans?
Our brains and video games
As far as we have heard and seen on the media channels and read some newspapers and articles, video games have an effect on our health and behavior. I cannot say whether they have a totally positive or negative impact on us but what I can say is that it is really famous activity among us in today’s world.
According to research, our brain performance and structure can be changed by video games. For example, video games can have a positive impact to increase memories. How so? I think there is a complex situation for me to understand deeply but the thing is memory depends on how information is complex and more. The 3-D games have all of them so, it helps somehow to boost memory.
Secondly, video games affect our attention because there are different types of attention requires such as selective attention. In order to accomplish the duty, there are many steps to pass successfully, and being successful is depending on how your memory strong and your attention is good enough to catch the details, and etc.
On the other hand, I have mostly thought video games have a negative impact on our behaviors because as far as I see, some games have a violent context. Furthermore, if you are exposed to violence almost every day or most of your time, you may become angrier, sensitive, and prone to violence. Also, because of your addiction to the games, it is likely to be apart from your social life. Actually, all of them depend on what kinds of games you prefer, that is why it is not true to be generalized all possibilities.
I would like to add one more thing is video games can increase the efficiency of brain regions related to visual skills. I have never thought about it but it makes sense because while playing games, there are many visuals and those visuals are important to remember the details in order to accomplish the duty. Therefore, gamers should pay attention to those visuals.
There are two aspects of video games but every day, those aspects are changing because also, new developments are involving in our lives. So, what do all these brain changes mean? “We focused on how the brain reacts to video game exposure, but these effects do not always translate to real-life changes,” says Palaus.
